Appreciation Dinner

Posted by Desmond Koh on 12:42 PM comments (0)

WSC held a Appreciation Dinner on 22nd Sept for all WSC volunteers who have commited their time and effort throughout the year to help our respective beneficiaries. This year the dinner was held at NTU Alumni Clubhouse at One-North.

Generally the design of the ballroom was quite ok, there were many comments that it looks more like a chinese wedding dinner and quite a few people were joking about getting married including our past and present youth coordinators :p The dinner was a buffet dinner which dampen the spirits abit since we all preferred it to be a more chinese dinner style like the previous year. However the food was better than last year according to those who attended so that might be a slight comfort.

After the dinner, there was a simple handing over ceremony from the 13th management comm to the 14th management comm. Testimonials were also given out to all active volunteers which is a new initiative starting this year (everyone please get yours from me when i get it from Joan). Some games followed and i believe the finale consisting of the 4 dances brought the most laughter and enjoyment to everyone.

Farewells

Today an egg related game was played. Since i was not with the games group, i am unable to really say how well it was but considering all the eggs were broken in half an hr, i would assume the boys didn't really do as well as expected. Tuition side was ok i guess, Sherri took her usual boy while i took mine with another small group but ended up only teaching 1 and chatting with the rest. Nothing much i have to say about sessions since they are already so regular for us so i'll rather touch on something else.

Hellos and farewells are very common for us and after saying hello many months ago, its time for us to bide farewell to some boys. Next week will be the last session both Sherri and myself will see our regular boys as they would finally be discharged from the hostel. For the regular volunteers, i believe all of us have built some strong bonds with our boys. Seeing them leave should be both a mixture of joy and sadness for us. We are happy that they have finish serving their term but theres also that bit of sadness that we won't get to see them as often anymore.

I would say our boys are special to us. They are not all exactly well behave, hardworking, polite or anything most people would like to see. In fact, quite a number might be playful, lazy, rude etc but all these adds up together to give us the experiences we all share. If all our boys were any different, don't call us nicknames, fool around at times etc etc i believe we won't have that much fun and enjoyment during our weekly sessions. Its their playful personality etc that adds the element of fun to what we do. Even though they might piss us off at times, the place would be different without them around.

In the next few months, we are seeing quite a number of familiar boys leaving. A mixture of the well behave and badly behave. Regardless of their behavior, i do hope we volunteers have managed to leave a mark in their lives as i certainly feel many of them have left a mark in our lives. Sessions might not be the same without them but i believe we'll be able to meet and bond with new boys who will bring with them new experiences for us to share.

Though the boys are unlikely to read this, I wish them all the best in whatever they do and I hope to still be able to see them around anywhere but inside the very place we got to know them ;)

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts,
and we are never, ever the same.

YOooo....it was 911!! With God blessing, no more terrorism this year...haha!! So we (Desmond, Huimin, chenhui, Frederick, sherri and of cause not forgetting me myself) went for session as usual. We had our dinner at can A before we set off to hostel. Ermm....it was just another tuition session, nothing special --> go there --> tuition --> go home.....

Hah!!If I really stop here, I think I am going to receive a SUPER long warning email from Desmond...

It was actually a very special session that we never had before! We have our first GAME session in the boy's hostel!! At first, we divided into two group, Fred and Chenhui in charge of the game, and others in charge of the tuition as usual. We reach there at about 745pm I think. Mr Lim told us that he had arranged 17 boys for the game sessions and only 2 boys for the tuition. Yes!!Only two boys!!(and of cause not forgetting sherri's "personal tutee") Why so little?? Haha, it was not because the game session was so popular that no boy wants to join tuition, but some of the boys were involving in some other activity. So Huimin and I join the game instead.

We started the game by a self-introduction which is useless for me. (I can't remember any of their names) And then, we start our game---> charades. Firstly, we divide the boys into 2 groups. Each group have to come out with the things and let the other gp to guess it. But the boys always come out with something that we can't understand it....Haha

It was the first time for all of us, some of the time we can't really control the boys...but...haha!! Luckily we have our 'lao ban nian'(not to mention who else this will be my last post!!Haha><) there. Else, the boys there may be out of control...Although it was not a perfect trial, i do believe that most of the boys enjoy themselves and really like the game session very much.
Fred and chen hui did a good start!!Gambateh!!

Thoughts from Me!

As usual, the thursday session is on. This week, only 5 of us are heading to the hostel. Guess what! The passion in us to help the boys never cease although the team size decrease for this week.

I doubt either the freshies have heard of me or see me. But it's me...the one that Desmond told the boys' hostel IC that I'm uniquely one that missing for the 1st half of the year and suddenly come weekly.

Let's Grandma Sherri tell you her story...

Like many of you, I turned up for the WSC interview for FOC but was poached to RSP Youth as the queue is shorter. I signed up for Girls' Home but don't know for what reason I was transferred to Boys' Hostel (in which I was very grateful for the arrangement as I was staying in Choa Chu Kang!)

As a direct-entry student, the sudden load of uni academic work really left me breathless. In addition, I even load further with some CCAs (so I might anytime reach my 'fatigue point' *maybe only engineering students know). I went for the 1st session meeting my mentee, YR (not to be mentioned). A conversation was engaged regarding his lifestyle in hostel, school academic and basic information of himself... I can see his 'don't care' expression but deep in him, he really wanted to seek for help. After my 1st session, I only came for one, two sessions. And...gone 'missing' I am as my 'uni load' was getting heavier...

Before 2nd sem exams, my thursday was free and I headed to hostel happily there. But sad to find out that YR had been released earlier for public holiday. This is when I got to know my SBHL friends well...! We chatted at the Boys' Home foyer as we though we could help out over there. Haha...

My next event is the SBHL Family Day. Witnessing the scenes where parents meet their children, parents play with their children and maybe even sit down for a simple meal with them... I doubt some of their families actually do that often as some of their parents are trying very hard to get income. And know what! We was talking to Mr Yew Teck and I do mention about YR that I see him very hardworking. Mr Yew Teck replied that he was very obedient out of boys. As I walked about with the team, I met him, YR! In that spilt second, the promise, to YR to come down for the weekly sessions, indeed climb up all the way up the top of all my commitments. You couldn't believe how strong a 'Yes' will change YR's academic and my usual school life!

As promised, I came for the following weekly tutoring session. His academic indeed lag behind a lot! I've to even teach him from the basic primary school maths. I was very pleased to see his earnest willpower to learn. As the weekly sessions goes, he is able to catch up just in time for 'N' level (maybe aim to attain a B?) and inspire to get his ideal course to ITE. During one of the sessions, I was not too sure whether he was joking or not that he wants to enter into Uni taking my course, mechnical engineering! (I did told him about my friend who is from EM3 to normal technical stream to ITE to Poly and finally went up to Uni) That's very touching for me...!

As many of them know I'm a Yr 3 student (busy with projects and schoolwork), having
5 types of CCA commitments (in which 4 are main-com/IC posts)! But I can still make it for the weekly sessions 'breathlessly'. I am always filled with satisfaction after all sessions so I never fail to attend any so far...

All I hope for him are having discipline in himself (not getting on with his past life), able to do well enough for 'N' levels to get into his ideal course, finding the exact goals for his life and ... Moving On Happily Ever After!!! Oops...is that too much? Counting down of 2 more weeks to his discharge, I really. Really want to give him all the help that I can.

I think all of my SBHL friends will agree with my thoughts! All of them primarily want the boys to Move on Happily ever after with exact goals in their lives!

Thanks for staying tune to 'Talk with Grandma Sherri' . *coughs, coughs*

RSP YOUth Orientation '08
a day of joy and laughter with our new blood of SBHL!!!

early saturday morning,
while many were still in lalaland..
there were a bunch of ppl at can A all ready to enjoy their orientation day!
& i'm veri proud that hostel was the first to gather and start the games outside LT 1A!!!

well, to ensure that everyone's fully awaked, we kick-started the day with my all time fav ice breaker.
THe 'slap-thigh' game!
LOL, of course.. it worked realli well =D
With more games to test our reflexes, we continued a combined youth game session b4 heading out for our food hunT!

Here's our food chain!

Donut --> Nacho cheese--> cheese prata--> 大包 (big bun)--> 爆米花 (popcorn)--> 花生(peanut) -->生菜沙拉 (salad)--> 拉茶(teh tarik) --> 茶叶蛋 (tea leaf egg)--> Egg Sandwich!

Although we din finish the entire chain, we had real fun, yeah?!
so much fun in playing polar bear that we almost forgot about the race! lolz...
In the end, we were 'summoned' back by our food ICs, cos we were too late and the rest were waiting for us!! (OPPS~)

Despite the rain, we walked from city hall mrt to esplanade.
We made our 'grand entrance' there...
of course, we din forget to have fun while eating the sandwiches!
guess what?
we started playing 终极密码 there...hahaz.
After clearing all the food, we went photo shooting with blk d ppl..

Without the enthusiasm from u guys, the orientation wouldn't be so much fun~
Special thanks to all our freshies... everyone who came for the orientation!
NOt forgetting our supportive seniors.. Chenhui, Joan, Winnie, Fred, Jennwah,Yean Sang!
& of course, each and everyone one who made this orientation possible!

Last but not least..
Let's celebrate the formation of our hostel gang!
Cheers~
