SBHL Lifesaving Telematch 2008

Posted by Desmond Koh on 4:20 PM comments (0)

Desmond msned me asking if I wanna help out with the swimming event. My first reaction: sian. Seriously, I am on the verge of rejecting him but then a kind-hearted soul like me couldn’t resist the temptation to concur. I am kidding. That day for us is pretty slack because prior planning was done efficiently and so everything was done in a snap. We had to catapult ourselves out of bed early in the morning, transferred those life jackets we borrowed to the minibus from my room. Everything was done pretty fast and we headed to Ngee Ann Poly. Initially, we kinda lost our way in NP as we couldn’t really find the swimming pool. Riddled by our stupidities, the way to the swimming pool was just a turn right from the entrance. Luckily, we were on time or should I say, the boys were late. The whole event went pretty smoothly and the boys were very well-behaved. The “life-saving” portion was quite brief and desmond said that boys have very little attention span so they need to make the session short. The boys learnt different life saving techniques such as wade rescue, pole rescue, etc etc. What was the most interesting part of the whole event was the telematch. They have the dog and bone game and I could see the enthusiasm in the boys(even though we were at the sides, chilling). While the boys were having fun, we practically have nothing to do but to talk cock sing song. We were bored to the extent that we were discussing what I was going to write in this particular entry. The event ended at around 12pm and I have this malicious thought of leaving straight from NP but then again, as I mentioned before I am a kind soul. So, we headed back to NTU to return those life jackets and we went off from there.

Peng Wen

Since hes such a kind soul i guess we should be able to expect him be to present in all future events as well and maybe writing more blog posts as well :p

hmmm, shall skip what happened in the morning =X

Yup, we headed to the boys' hostel earlier yesterday. I must say that i really had a fun time =]=] . Initially i didnt know how to interact with them. I was very shy. I simply have no topics to talk to them. So i started playing " soccer" with the boys using COINS. It was fun! at least i feel happy that the boys laughed and enjoyed themselves. I was the judge! Kind of scared ya because i was a bit biased towards one of the boys. I really enjoyed playing with 4-5 of them. After that i decided to move to the next table. That was when i felt so rewarded. =X haha. Yup, chatted with one of the boys. I asked him about studies. Well, i would say that he knows what he want! i guess this is really important. He told me what he is lagging of now and then, for e.g. commitment etc. Well, i started sharing with him my thoughts. I told him that he is really halfway there to achieve his dream because he could actually tell me what he wants in future. I felt that it was quite silly when one knew that what had gone wrong and not correcting it! I asked him why he didnt try to correct it. Well, i got an answer from him which i guessed correctly also. well, in my previous post i mentioned on "external force" , i guess this is where it can put to use =] .

feel disappointed that yesterday was the last session for this year =[=[=[ . SAD
i really look forward to the next session . I cant wait for that day to come. YEAH! I hope some of them will still remember me =X

Haha..so today there's like the three old birds a.k.a desmond, fred & hui min, and me =.= So we were like waiting for the latecomers outside the hostel, then desmond was like telling me that this was like going to be one of the few times that we came to the hostel before sun sets.

So, today was really different from the past two times i came to the hostel. The first time was a game session, second was a briefing and this, was really a eye opener. It's like, wow, I don't have to do anything. LoL. Just sat back and enjoyed the show. This Christmas celebration was actually a talentshow. So, they did like hmm, basketball shuffling, shuffle dance, magic show and song performance. Even the other volunteers also got a special christmas carolling item. As usual, hui min forgot to bring her laughter-suppressant medicine... we were singing christmas songs then got a part glooOooOOooOOooo...ria in excelsis deo. I thought nothing wrong with the song wad, why is she laughing? Turns out the boys at the back was making the oOOooOOoOoo that amused her. Haha.

But besides all that, the director said something that was really important today. That is, everyone has a hidden talent. They need opportunities to exhibit and develop that talent and this christmas celebration really showed me quite a bit. And that, being admitted into the hostel, doesnt mean it's hopeless to change. We, as volunteers can make the hostel a better place, a place full of hope.

Why voluteerism?? Why Youth? i was posted with these questions most of the time when people asked me what CCA i planned to join in NTU. Well, even the interviewer ask me these questions. I was asked again yesterday by one of the POs. I was quite afraid to answer because he might think that i am just being naive.

My answer was " i hope to inspire and motivate the boys . On top of that i strongly believe that they are not as bad as we thought ......"

well, yesterday was like a sharing session. Yes, inspiring and motivating them is rather challenging but i strongly believe that they need the so called " external force" to push them or stay with them =]. I just want to be the "external force" to help them along their way. Well, some of them might have lost the "inner force" they used to have due to low self esteem hence i hope that the "external force" can compensate it . The " external force" will slowly help to build the "inner force" because the "external force" will have to leave one day. ( ARE YOU ALL LOST ALREADY?) i am not sure if i am right but that has always been my mindset.

I felt kind of irritated or disappointed when the PO told us that some of the boys were being despised or detested by the teachers in school. I felt that the teachers should provide these boys with the "external force" rather than pouring cold water on them. Yes i know , the teachers feel that the boys are not interested to learn but have they gone in depth to learn what is going on? Are the teachers willing to guide , motivate them? They were probably say " i have too many students and work to do " I guess i cant blame them too. Perhaps , i have an ideal picture of how a teacher should be like so i tend to grumble... ( haha)

Well, i am looking foward to thursday not because of the suppers etc but really to interact with the boys. Perhaps , initially i would be a bit shy, but certainly i believe as time flies, things will be better. =]=]

Okays, i shall stop here =] . Sometimes i wonder how many of you would visit this website . haha

First Experience

Posted by Desmond Koh on 5:21 PM comments (0)

well, finally we got to go to the boys' hostel but it is sad to know that its gonna be our last session for this semester too. =[

Hmm, i would say that i really got a shock by the boys' reactions when they saw us. They were very high but isnt it a good thing to see that they are enjoying themselves even though we had difficulties settling them? hmmm, let me put myself in their shoes. If i were them , would i even join the games? Would i even bother to say hi to the volunteers? Perhaps i would just hide at one corner feeling inferior and lousy inside. This is something which i would really want to credit them. Everyone makes mistakes but i guess at least they have already learn to submit to fate and serve their terms. Well , am i too naive to think that way? Will they really learn from their mistakes?

When they entered the room , i saw a boy who look really very "guai" . I started to tell kai luen about him . I was not sure if my judgement was right . He was very quiet initially but after that i heard him using all the crude words which once again shocked me. But does that mean that he has spoilt my initial impression of him? Think harder again! hmmm, i have guy frens who also use crude words in front of me too! ( nvm , wont think so much )

Afterall , i had a lot of fun that day. They laughed really out loud. This made me realised something. Some of them are still young . I still strongly believe that most of them are still very innocent but just that they accidentally chose the wrong path. They have no worries now unlike some of us . i really envy some of them . I am sure some of them are feeling down because they have to be coop inside the hostel but still they live happily everyday. they are brave enough =]. Perhaps this is something which i should really learn from them.

Hmmm, i have a lot to write but i guess i will stop here if not others may think that i think too much le! i hope that i will get to talk to them more next time round and i still believe that no matter what they had done before , i still believe that they are like other boys out there who have a geniue heart to learn , to help etc..

Hi.. It's me again!
Last last sat, we were at suntec exhibition hall !
Enjoying a sumptuous buffet... =P

There were around 11 NTU Youth volunteers present...
all of us crowded around a table, eating the door gift(cookies made by the people from IMH) and watching the stage performances at the same time! (ntu ppl are hungry ppl, LOL)

After we had our fill, we went around snapping photos
and many of us were crazy with the balloon sculptures made by one of the booths which were on display at the back of the hall! There were also handmade cards, can ornaments and other interesting handicrafts too!

Oh and the highlight of the event.. was the 'catwalk' by me and my adorable buddy geraldine.
LOL. We were jus too addicted to red carpet...

Many Many Snap Shots...

Appreciation Dinner

Posted by Desmond Koh on 12:42 PM comments (0)

WSC held a Appreciation Dinner on 22nd Sept for all WSC volunteers who have commited their time and effort throughout the year to help our respective beneficiaries. This year the dinner was held at NTU Alumni Clubhouse at One-North.

Generally the design of the ballroom was quite ok, there were many comments that it looks more like a chinese wedding dinner and quite a few people were joking about getting married including our past and present youth coordinators :p The dinner was a buffet dinner which dampen the spirits abit since we all preferred it to be a more chinese dinner style like the previous year. However the food was better than last year according to those who attended so that might be a slight comfort.

After the dinner, there was a simple handing over ceremony from the 13th management comm to the 14th management comm. Testimonials were also given out to all active volunteers which is a new initiative starting this year (everyone please get yours from me when i get it from Joan). Some games followed and i believe the finale consisting of the 4 dances brought the most laughter and enjoyment to everyone.

Farewells

Today an egg related game was played. Since i was not with the games group, i am unable to really say how well it was but considering all the eggs were broken in half an hr, i would assume the boys didn't really do as well as expected. Tuition side was ok i guess, Sherri took her usual boy while i took mine with another small group but ended up only teaching 1 and chatting with the rest. Nothing much i have to say about sessions since they are already so regular for us so i'll rather touch on something else.

Hellos and farewells are very common for us and after saying hello many months ago, its time for us to bide farewell to some boys. Next week will be the last session both Sherri and myself will see our regular boys as they would finally be discharged from the hostel. For the regular volunteers, i believe all of us have built some strong bonds with our boys. Seeing them leave should be both a mixture of joy and sadness for us. We are happy that they have finish serving their term but theres also that bit of sadness that we won't get to see them as often anymore.

I would say our boys are special to us. They are not all exactly well behave, hardworking, polite or anything most people would like to see. In fact, quite a number might be playful, lazy, rude etc but all these adds up together to give us the experiences we all share. If all our boys were any different, don't call us nicknames, fool around at times etc etc i believe we won't have that much fun and enjoyment during our weekly sessions. Its their playful personality etc that adds the element of fun to what we do. Even though they might piss us off at times, the place would be different without them around.

In the next few months, we are seeing quite a number of familiar boys leaving. A mixture of the well behave and badly behave. Regardless of their behavior, i do hope we volunteers have managed to leave a mark in their lives as i certainly feel many of them have left a mark in our lives. Sessions might not be the same without them but i believe we'll be able to meet and bond with new boys who will bring with them new experiences for us to share.

Though the boys are unlikely to read this, I wish them all the best in whatever they do and I hope to still be able to see them around anywhere but inside the very place we got to know them ;)

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts,
and we are never, ever the same.

YOooo....it was 911!! With God blessing, no more terrorism this year...haha!! So we (Desmond, Huimin, chenhui, Frederick, sherri and of cause not forgetting me myself) went for session as usual. We had our dinner at can A before we set off to hostel. Ermm....it was just another tuition session, nothing special --> go there --> tuition --> go home.....

Hah!!If I really stop here, I think I am going to receive a SUPER long warning email from Desmond...

It was actually a very special session that we never had before! We have our first GAME session in the boy's hostel!! At first, we divided into two group, Fred and Chenhui in charge of the game, and others in charge of the tuition as usual. We reach there at about 745pm I think. Mr Lim told us that he had arranged 17 boys for the game sessions and only 2 boys for the tuition. Yes!!Only two boys!!(and of cause not forgetting sherri's "personal tutee") Why so little?? Haha, it was not because the game session was so popular that no boy wants to join tuition, but some of the boys were involving in some other activity. So Huimin and I join the game instead.

We started the game by a self-introduction which is useless for me. (I can't remember any of their names) And then, we start our game---> charades. Firstly, we divide the boys into 2 groups. Each group have to come out with the things and let the other gp to guess it. But the boys always come out with something that we can't understand it....Haha

It was the first time for all of us, some of the time we can't really control the boys...but...haha!! Luckily we have our 'lao ban nian'(not to mention who else this will be my last post!!Haha><) there. Else, the boys there may be out of control...Although it was not a perfect trial, i do believe that most of the boys enjoy themselves and really like the game session very much.
Fred and chen hui did a good start!!Gambateh!!

Thoughts from Me!

Posted by Sherries on 7:48 AM comments (0)

As usual, the thursday session is on. This week, only 5 of us are heading to the hostel. Guess what! The passion in us to help the boys never cease although the team size decrease for this week.

I doubt either the freshies have heard of me or see me. But it's me...the one that Desmond told the boys' hostel IC that I'm uniquely one that missing for the 1st half of the year and suddenly come weekly.

Let's Grandma Sherri tell you her story...

Like many of you, I turned up for the WSC interview for FOC but was poached to RSP Youth as the queue is shorter. I signed up for Girls' Home but don't know for what reason I was transferred to Boys' Hostel (in which I was very grateful for the arrangement as I was staying in Choa Chu Kang!)

As a direct-entry student, the sudden load of uni academic work really left me breathless. In addition, I even load further with some CCAs (so I might anytime reach my 'fatigue point' *maybe only engineering students know). I went for the 1st session meeting my mentee, YR (not to be mentioned). A conversation was engaged regarding his lifestyle in hostel, school academic and basic information of himself... I can see his 'don't care' expression but deep in him, he really wanted to seek for help. After my 1st session, I only came for one, two sessions. And...gone 'missing' I am as my 'uni load' was getting heavier...

Before 2nd sem exams, my thursday was free and I headed to hostel happily there. But sad to find out that YR had been released earlier for public holiday. This is when I got to know my SBHL friends well...! We chatted at the Boys' Home foyer as we though we could help out over there. Haha...

My next event is the SBHL Family Day. Witnessing the scenes where parents meet their children, parents play with their children and maybe even sit down for a simple meal with them... I doubt some of their families actually do that often as some of their parents are trying very hard to get income. And know what! We was talking to Mr Yew Teck and I do mention about YR that I see him very hardworking. Mr Yew Teck replied that he was very obedient out of boys. As I walked about with the team, I met him, YR! In that spilt second, the promise, to YR to come down for the weekly sessions, indeed climb up all the way up the top of all my commitments. You couldn't believe how strong a 'Yes' will change YR's academic and my usual school life!

As promised, I came for the following weekly tutoring session. His academic indeed lag behind a lot! I've to even teach him from the basic primary school maths. I was very pleased to see his earnest willpower to learn. As the weekly sessions goes, he is able to catch up just in time for 'N' level (maybe aim to attain a B?) and inspire to get his ideal course to ITE. During one of the sessions, I was not too sure whether he was joking or not that he wants to enter into Uni taking my course, mechnical engineering! (I did told him about my friend who is from EM3 to normal technical stream to ITE to Poly and finally went up to Uni) That's very touching for me...!

As many of them know I'm a Yr 3 student (busy with projects and schoolwork), having
5 types of CCA commitments (in which 4 are main-com/IC posts)! But I can still make it for the weekly sessions 'breathlessly'. I am always filled with satisfaction after all sessions so I never fail to attend any so far...

All I hope for him are having discipline in himself (not getting on with his past life), able to do well enough for 'N' levels to get into his ideal course, finding the exact goals for his life and ... Moving On Happily Ever After!!! Oops...is that too much? Counting down of 2 more weeks to his discharge, I really. Really want to give him all the help that I can.

I think all of my SBHL friends will agree with my thoughts! All of them primarily want the boys to Move on Happily ever after with exact goals in their lives!

Thanks for staying tune to 'Talk with Grandma Sherri' . *coughs, coughs*

RSP YOUth Orientation '08
a day of joy and laughter with our new blood of SBHL!!!

early saturday morning,
while many were still in lalaland..
there were a bunch of ppl at can A all ready to enjoy their orientation day!
& i'm veri proud that hostel was the first to gather and start the games outside LT 1A!!!

well, to ensure that everyone's fully awaked, we kick-started the day with my all time fav ice breaker.
THe 'slap-thigh' game!
LOL, of course.. it worked realli well =D
With more games to test our reflexes, we continued a combined youth game session b4 heading out for our food hunT!

Here's our food chain!

Donut --> Nacho cheese--> cheese prata--> 大包 (big bun)--> 爆米花 (popcorn)--> 花生(peanut) -->生菜沙拉 (salad)--> 拉茶(teh tarik) --> 茶叶蛋 (tea leaf egg)--> Egg Sandwich!

Although we din finish the entire chain, we had real fun, yeah?!
so much fun in playing polar bear that we almost forgot about the race! lolz...
In the end, we were 'summoned' back by our food ICs, cos we were too late and the rest were waiting for us!! (OPPS~)

Despite the rain, we walked from city hall mrt to esplanade.
We made our 'grand entrance' there...
of course, we din forget to have fun while eating the sandwiches!
guess what?
we started playing 终极密码 there...hahaz.
After clearing all the food, we went photo shooting with blk d ppl..

Without the enthusiasm from u guys, the orientation wouldn't be so much fun~
Special thanks to all our freshies... everyone who came for the orientation!
NOt forgetting our supportive seniors.. Chenhui, Joan, Winnie, Fred, Jennwah,Yean Sang!
& of course, each and everyone one who made this orientation possible!

Last but not least..
Let's celebrate the formation of our hostel gang!
Cheers~

我要看到我的脸! 我要看到我的脸! 我要看到我的脸! haha.. how come my face is not in any of the pictures?? :)

The reason is.... I had not been turning up for the recent gatherings organized by Desmond and Co. Hahaha, anyway it may be a blessing in disguise for me!!! Everytime they organize outing sure rain one! JOkes aside, I always believe that youth SBHL is like one close family. Although we do not have the large numbers of volunteers compared to other RSPs, I believed that we are like a close family whereby members are closely knitted to one another. So i actually feel quite bad not being able to turn up for gatherings organized by Desmond... lol, so desmond stop suaning me okie??? ;)

Nevertheless, I did attend session today hrmmm yesterday i mean!! haha.. Attending session is like a routine to me after 2 years le.. But i always enjoy toking cock with the boys.. giving them a lighter touch of what's life and how meaningful and enjoyable life can be. Today, like any other sessions, teaching them maths or any other subjects is realli realli tough. Their attention span is so short.... BUt can't be helped la.. come on life is not about studying lo.. hahaha..

okie... as usual i am super tired le.. I will like to end of using a quote from an email sebt to me by my friend:-

"We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things."

What's the best gift for a man nicknamed'mr chocoholic'?
It's of course... Chocolates, chocolates and more chocolates!!!

So here we are, presenting the super big humper with lots of M&Ms, chocolate bars of all kinds and also a mug with 'chocoholic' printed on it!
we r so sweet rite?
=P

Hopefully, we'll have more birthday celebrations for all our volunteers too!
Cya again for more excitment on Youth Orientation 08!

Rain and Pretty Lights (23rd August 2008)

Posted by cardmage on 9:55 PM comments (0)

Here is the promised second part of that day's events. As I've mentioned earlier, it was raining when i had to go for the talk. In actual fact, it was raining for the whole day. Of course, this fact was lost on us when we were sitting in the comfort of the conference hall and happily listening to the talk. It was however much more difficult to simply dismiss Mother Nature when she's insistently tapping on our heads.

Of course, this was not without its rewards. The reason we were out in the rain without our umbrellas was because we had gone to watch the fireworks display for the Singapore Fireworks Festival. And what a pretty display that was. The display was 15 minutes long, choreographed by a Korean company and set to Korean music, some of which were from some drama serials (no doubt many would recognize "Da Chang Jing" ["Jewel In The Palace" in English] and the "Wu La La" singing). This is a link to the video:

Fireworks Display

Unfortunately, you need to be a member of the facebook group to admire Yean Sang's masterful video-taking skills.

And you know, after a while, we decided we like the rain after all. In fact, we liked it so much we decided we would eat at Makan Sutra and soak in all the rain. Here's a photo as proof:

The reason there wasn't any food on the table was because we haven't bought it yet. Oh well, to be honest we didn't eat there in the end, because the rain was getting a bit too heavy and instead ate at a nearby restaurant called Urban East or something. The food wasn't bad but their service left quite a bit to be desired. But by then everybody was a bit crazy and high so we really enjoyed ourselves. In fact, we almost made it an overnight trip yet again. If only there wasn't the recce mission the next day.

Inspiration (23rd August 2008)

Let me start off this blog entry with a complaint. Who wrote that SBHL stands for Super Buzzling & Happening Land? I object. That sounds so teenage girlish. Actually I bet I know who thought of that. Huimin!

*standard Fred troubled pose with hand covering face*

That aside, talking about words that stand for other words, there's this other one: MIRACLE.

Mindsent
Imagination
Rational solutions
Advantage maker
Consistency
Legacy-building
Enduring Success

That was the message that Dr William Tan, a neurosurgeon and holder of the Guiness record for completing 7 marathons across 7 continents in 27 days had to share. And one could see from his video and the tidbits of his life that he shared that it was also the way he lived. Here is a photo that we took with him.

And here you see what I have yet to mention and one would never have guessed at.

Dr William Tan, born in 1957, was afflicted with polio at the age of 2. This disease left him permanently crippled from waist down. Such a physical handicap would have left another man defeated but Dr William rose above his limitations. He refused to be daunted and set out to prove that he was above whatever challenges lay in his path. He was also a man who dared to dream. In 1980, when people around him all told him it would be impossible, he became the first Singaporean who was paraplegic to complete a marathon. This was the event that started his career in marathons. It also inspired many others with similar physical handicaps to emulate him. The Guiness record was also another of his dreams, one he had spent the last 3 years pursuing. And despite achieving all that, he continues to dream big. He reveals he has set his sights on further ventures.

Meeting with and listening to Dr Tan has left me very much in awe and at the same time deeply humbled. Here is proof that the human spirit is truly indomitable. And there's able-bodied me who's fat, lazy and almost wanted to skip this because of a bit of rain thinking its another silly little speech by some random person. I am so glad I went.

Next post about our volunteer's bonding session on that same day as soon as I can write it.

hey! finally our first ever boys' hostel blog is up! i'm so so so excited about this. credits to Nicole for choosing a nice skin and Desmond for helping with html!! =)

first of all, let me start off by blogging about the session we had last thurs.
as usual, i ended lecture at about 6.30pm and rushed to cant A to meet up with the rest. to my surprise, i only saw Yean Sang there! after that i realised that Nicole and Desmond were actually at the table behind us 'busy-ing' with some interview stuffs. so me and Yean Sang ended up eating Mcd and gosh, the Mcspicy i had was super spicy loh! oops i think i have digressed quite a bit. well, after that Fred and Sherry joined us and we set off at about 7.20pm.( but we were still late by about 5 minutes.) LOL.

as usual, all of us went to tutor the boys in their academic work while Desmond went to have a meeting with the person-in-charge Mr Lim. but something quite special that happened to me on that day was, the boys whom i was attending to were not doing their work. instead, we ended up chit-chatting throughout the whole session. zz.

some of the boys are actually having their 'N' and 'O' level examination this year and it's most pleasing to see them working hard. for instance on that day, other than the 3boys whom i was chit-chatting with, i saw Nicole, Sherri, Fred and Yean Sang being engrossed in tutoring the boys, and from the boys' expressions, i could tell that they were putting in effort too! don't you all think this gives tremendous satisfaction to all of us??! =)

after the session ended, we went to the nearby food court to have our so called 'debriefing session' cos Desmond wanted to discuss something with all of us. it was about improving on the current programs( hmm can't disclose much here). we spent more than 2 hours there discussing and it went a little heated, especially between xxx and xxx. haha!
however, at the end we managed to come up with a win-win solution and we're gonna try it out in our upcoming session. hopefully it works!!!

i think all of us arrived home at about 12 plus that day. tired yet satisfactory. i'm sure all of our volunteers would find that it's all worth it! for the boys, we dare! and we chiong too!! =P
millions thanks to all the volunteers for staying back late for the discussion.

yup pardon me for this long entry. that's the end of my summary. whose turn next??!
c u guys next thurs! =D
