volunteering at a boys' hostel is fascinating!
having volunteered in various organizations, i would say every type of beneficiary is distinct and challenging in its own way..
initially, i wanted to explore why the youths there do what they do to be there..
but i realized that this question is not easy to answer..
there are a lot of factors which we will never be aware of, unless they trust you enough to share their stories with you..
sometimes, i'm surprised that they share without being asked..
it's really fulfilling to hear them talk about themselves..to get to know them better..'coz this implies the tutee is willing to open up to you..
however, the relationship is still limited as we are on different grounds as them..
therefore, we can't expect them to see us as friends and treat us the way they treat their buddies..
nevertheless, the goal of the volunteering session would be to get them to study..
this, too, is extremely challenging..
knowing what appeals to them in order to motivate them to do things is the key!
however, it's not easy to discover the key..
we've just gotta do trial and error and hope that our method works..
it may be satisfying and rewarding when you see the tutee putting in the effort to do the work and showing you respect..
but i would not dismiss the influence of peer pressure..
thus, i feel that the most important thing is to teach the tutee to have the self-discipline to study..
in fact, many of them are actually rather intelligent..
therefore, i really hope that each one of them can see their strength and talent and work on it..
overall, it's fun, interesting, and exciting working with these youths..
they lend a different perspective to life..
it's full of unexpectedness and unpredictability..
there are endless things to explore, discover, and learn..
simply put, it's never a dull day..
cheerios,
shiqi(:
